Vik and I arrived at Barren Grounds somewhere between 1 and 2pm and spent about four hours wandering along one of the walking tracks which travels through forest, heathland and rainforest.

We got steadily more and more damp from the misting rain and an uneven track which on occasions more closely resembled a creek.

A number of leeches tried to bleed me out via my sandled feet and one adventuresome leech frustrated by Vik's shoes and jeans was found to have attached itself to his belly.

But as any keen birder knows, discomforts are a minor consideration when the result is the sighting of a lifer.
